Member Spotlight

We hope you enjoy our Member Spotlight. Each month, we’ll take a moment to highlight one of the incredible individuals who make our Chapter so special. From their unique stories and experiences to the ways they contribute, inspire, and connect with others, this is our chance to get to know the people behind the names a little better. We hope this feature not only celebrates our members, but also strengthens the sense of connection that makes our Chapter such a meaningful organization.

Scott Hartman, CPCU

Industry Experience: 25 years in claims leadership
Now transitioning to Finance with Charles Schwab

Scott was inspired to earn his CPCU due to the strong respect it holds within the industry and to enhance his knowledge of the various aspects of the industry in general. He says, “Over the years, with increased responsibility, I had to deal with lots of litigation within the claims realm and it really helped me get a grasp of the legal environment without actually having a law degree.”

As he studied the Life and Annuities segment of the industry, he was surprised to learn that beneficiary death benefits vary by state, particularly in cases involving divorce. Some states allow divorced spouses to retain beneficiary rights while others automatically terminate divorcee rights. (It pays to know; just in case.) Of paramount importance to Scott is the CPCU Code of Ethics. The respect that the industry gives to a CPCU is intimately connected to ethical behavior. We must be unwavering in this regard.

A word of advice?  Jump in first with a minor (Associates) designation program.  This will give you the feel of the more complex CPCU course of study.  Plan on spending two years on the designation and a lot of nightly studying.  Knowledge is the one thing that can't be taken away from you by your employer. Always keep learning and changing - if you stop, the world will pass you by.

Take a break: Scott requires high quality coffee while listening to NPR to stay abreast of the news.  As he transitions into Finance, he wishes all the Chapter members a fond farewell and will miss them greatly. Insurance is a fabulous career if you are one who likes to help people.  Homes, autos, and financial security are critically important facets in many people’s lives.
